A political expert breaks down Wisconsin’s biggest races

LA CROSSE, Wis. — The newest Marquette Law School Survey showed Gov. Tony Evers in a virtual tie with Republican challenger Tim Michels.

University of Wisconsin-La Crosse political science professor Anthony Chergosky said he doesn’t expect the polls to change much before Election Day.

“I think the big unknown here is how people react when they learn more about Tim Michels. That’s something that really stood out to me from the Marquette poll,” Chergosky noted.

He noted that 33 percent of registered voters viewed Michels favorably and 33 percent viewed him unfavorably, according to the Marquette poll.

“But you’ve got a lot of people out there who haven’t made up their minds about Tim Michels. I think we’re in a tight race, but it’s going to be a race for both sides to define Tim Michels. positively or negatively,” Chergosky said.

He said he thinks that will have a big effect on this race. Chergosky also called the August polls an “indicator,” but said they don’t give us an accurate idea of how the election will turn out.
