What really happened to beloved fitness icon Richard Simmons, who has not been seen for over eight years? There are many theories: his mistress is holding him hostage, his beloved dog died and left him devastated, his medical problems made it too difficult for him to continue working, he was tired of hearing other people’s problems, or maybe he was just going through to become a woman. Some of these are absolutely false…others carry some weight. TMZ went over the facts and spoke to those closest to him, including comedian Bruce Vilanch, Suzanne Somers, Dr. Phil and Simmons’ costume designer Leslie Wilshire. Finally, we’ve discovered the answer: why a beloved icon just vanished into thin air.

TMZ INVESTIGATES: WHAT REALLY HAPPENED TO RICHARD SIMMONS is produced by Harvey Levin, Charles Latibeaudiere and Ryan Regan and co-produced by Jess Fusco. The special will air for free on Tubi starting August 30.
