NORTH HUNTINGDON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – Six tense hours ended peacefully in North Huntingdon. It started at a home on Ivanhoe Drive at 1 p.m<\/p>\n
Police were called to conduct a welfare check, but retreated and called for backup when they heard gunshots.<\/p>\n
The streets around the house were closed and neighbors were locked out, including a hair salon across the street.<\/p>\n
Jacqueline Ricker was finishing up a hair appointment.<\/p>\n
“I was standing there in the beauty shop getting my hair done, and the next thing we know, the police were at the door telling us to come to the back,” she said.<\/p>\n
“I thought it was kind of a joke. Then I realized he was serious. I guess I was shocked,” said Annette Albensi. I was working in the store at the time.<\/p>\n
Finally, the police evacuated the houses and businesses. They were taking people to the parking lot of a nearby daycare center.<\/p>\n
Around seven in the afternoon, the situation ended.<\/p>\n
“The individual left the house. We were able to talk him to the ground and subsequently take them into custody,” said Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Stephen Limani.<\/p>\n
He says they treated it as a mental health situation.<\/p>\n
“I think the most important thing is you try to get the person the help they need to see what led to this type of incident,” Limani said.<\/p>\n
Law enforcement acted on information that several weapons were in the home, including long guns. Limani says he’s thankful things didn’t turn out differently.<\/p>\n
“If you try to force your way in or try to force a situation to be resolved quickly, that’s usually not the best course of action.”<\/p>\n
The man’s identity has not been released. He was the only one in the house. We’re told he will likely face charges.<\/p>\n
