A Meriden father accidentally shot his 17-year-old son Friday afternoon while allegedly teaching the boy about firearms, police said.<\/p>\n

The teenager was shot near his shoulder with a 9 mm handgun around 3:05 p.m. Friday on Forest Avenue, according to the Meriden Police Department.<\/p>\n

The boy’s father accidentally shot him while “he had been showing him the gun,” police said.<\/p>\n

“The father planned to acclimatize his son to firearms in order to begin firearms training at a local gun range in the near future,” the police department said in a statement.<\/p>\n

The boy was taken to the hospital by ambulance and then transferred to a trauma center by Life Star, police said.<\/p>\n

Police were still at the scene of the shooting Friday evening and the investigation was ongoing. No one else was injured in the shooting, police said. <\/p>\n

No further information was immediately available.<\/p>\n
