CEDAR FALLS – Pickleball Club representatives met with city officials last week to discuss doubling the size of the courts at Orchard Hill Park, Department of Community Development officials said.<\/p>\n

A recent survey of club members found that the number one priority is to increase the number of courts, said Charles Blair-Broeker, past president and club spokesman.<\/p>\n

The Council was told that a ‘pedestrian bridge’ was built on private property, near where Eden Way and Andy Avenue merge, as a ‘shortcut’ to the school. <\/p>\n

The sport has grown in popularity across the United States, including Cedar Falls.<\/p>\n

“The city’s response has been favorable, but we do not yet have a firm plan or cost estimates,” Blair-Broeker said in an email Wednesday. \u201cThe city has not taken any action and we still don’t know where we stand in terms of the schedule for capital projects. To date, there are exactly zero dollars allocated or raised for new courts.”<\/p>\n

Four of the eight courts have recently recovered. The other four are scheduled to be redone sometime this fall, Brian Heath, division director of operations and maintenance, said at a Parks and Recreation Commission meeting last week.<\/p>\n

“The Cedar Falls Pickleball Club is very appreciative of the partnership we have with the city of Cedar Falls and we can’t wait to get started,” said Commissioner Clare Struck. “In fact, part of the drive is, once the schedule and plan is established, to roll out fundraising by the club to support the project and look at possible grants, as we did with the rest of the courts” .<\/p>\n

The courts at Orchard Hill, off Primrose Drive, are packed every morning between 6:30 and 10:30 or so.<\/p>\n

Visibility issues for drivers at Sixth and State streets are pushing the city to help protect pedestrians who use the crosswalk at the intersection.<\/p>\n

But they are also popular on many nights.<\/p>\n

“They’re getting used to not just old people going early in the morning,” Struck said.<\/p>\n

The first set of courts opened in 2018.<\/p>\n

In the city’s capital improvement program, $125,000 has been allocated for lighting in fiscal year 2025. Funds have also been set aside to replace the acrylic surface.<\/p>\n
