At the end of an eight-hour Apopka City Council meeting, two non-binding votes with big implications sent shock waves through Apopka. <\/p>\n
The Council voted 3-2 that they have no confidence in Fire Chief Sean Wylam and recommended that Mayor Bryan Nelson change leadership at the Apopka Fire Department. In a second motion, the Council voted 3-2 to remove City Attorney Michael Rodr\u00edguez from his position.<\/p>\n
Both motions would still require Nelson to make the decision as mayor to remove either Wylam or Rodriguez.<\/p>\n
“I hope you take this into consideration, the will of this Council,” Commissioner Kyle Becker told Nelson.<\/p>\n
Commissioners Becker (who made the motions), Nick Nesta (who seconded both motions) and Diane Vel\u00e1zquez voted no confidence in Wylam and removed Rodriguez, while Nelson and Commissioner Alexander Smith voted against both motions.<\/p>\n
Wylam was named fire chief in August 2019, while Rodriguez started as city attorney in May 2020.<\/p>\n
“We have to start somewhere,” Vel\u00e1zquez said. “And the feedback from the public over the last eight months has given us all reason to say that changes need to be made.”<\/p>\n
