CULVER, Ore. (KTVZ) — At Culver’s Maragas Winery, they are finally seeing the buds break on their vines. This late spring has caused some delays in the process. <\/p>\n
“They’re all going to be like that, some of them a little more than others,” Doug Maragas, the winemaker, said Sunday. “But that’s what we call bud break. You see the bud open and the leaves form.”<\/p>\n
In the winery, they are finally starting to see the shoots of their vines begin. The recent weather has been very wet and cooler than last year.<\/p>\n
“This year because of the delay, which is difficult because you want to get the ripe fruit, but it’s good because it’s much less likely to freeze after that,” he said. <\/p>\n
Last year, the Maragas winery harvested between the end of August and November. This year, the delay means harvest is expected to take place from mid-September to November. Maragas said last year’s harvest was reduced due to the weather and he hopes it won’t happen again this year. <\/p>\n
Primary shoots: The only shoot that will grow will remain intact and remain there until warmer weather. If a primary bud breaks, a secondary bud will grow to replace the first. <\/p>\n

“They’re a little bit bigger (the barrels) than what’s typical in the United States,” he said. “They’re called barrels. So they’re 70 gallons each instead of 59 and as you go up, you can see they’re different types of barrels.<\/p>\n
On May 14th there will be live jazz music from one to four in the afternoon to celebrate the outbreak and Mother’s Day and there is no cover charge to attend.<\/p>\n
