BROCKTON, Mass. – The Brockton Public School District will eliminate 130 certified staff positions, the superintendent said Monday.<\/p>\n
The decision to cut staff came as the district faces an $18 million deficit, Brockton Public Schools Superintendent Mike Thomas said in a statement.<\/p>\n
“Since the start of the pandemic, the district’s enrollment has decreased by nearly 1,350 students,” Thomas said. “After exhausting all other options and facing an $18 million shortfall, the district was forced to issue reduction-in-force notices today that will result in the elimination of 130 certified staff positions” .<\/p>\n
Additional notices will be distributed to non-certified staff members in the coming days, Thomas said. <\/p>\n
\u201cWhile we are confident that our five-year district improvement process will encourage new families to move to Brockton, unfortunately our current enrollment does not support existing staffing levels,\u201d Thomas said. “This is in no way a reflection of the incredible work our educators do every day and I am very disappointed that it has come to this.”<\/p>\n
