{"id":22534,"date":"2023-05-30T15:09:34","date_gmt":"2023-05-30T15:09:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news24feed.com\/?p=22534"},"modified":"2023-05-30T15:09:35","modified_gmt":"2023-05-30T15:09:35","slug":"ugandas-anti-gay-law-how-politicians-around-the-world-reacted","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news24feed.com\/?p=22534","title":{"rendered":"Uganda&#8217;s anti-gay law: How politicians around the world reacted"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<p>Uganda&#8217;s president signed a sweeping anti-gay bill that includes the death penalty on Monday, prompting calls from human rights activists and politicians around the world to repeal the law.<\/p>\n<h3>What&#8217;s in Uganda&#8217;s new anti-gay law?<\/h3>\n<p>The Anti-Homosexuality Act is &#8220;among the toughest anti-LGBTQ laws in the world&#8221;. <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-africa-65745850\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">BBC News<\/a> denounced, with life sentences for those who maintain homosexual relations.<\/p>\n<p>Even people suspected of so-called &#8220;attempted homosexuality&#8221; could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison.  Meanwhile, the law also prohibits the &#8220;promotion of homosexuality&#8221; and &#8220;targets individuals deemed to be collaborators in homosexuality.&#8221; <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2023\/03\/22\/uganda-anti-gay-bill-death-penalty\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">axes<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The law also calls for the death penalty for those convicted of &#8220;aggravated homosexuality,&#8221; which the law defines as same-sex relationships between children, the disabled or someone unconscious, for <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/05\/29\/world\/africa\/uganda-anti-gay-bill.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">The New York Times<\/a>.  &#8220;Aggravated homosexuality attempt&#8221;, on the other hand, carries a prison sentence of up to 14 years.<\/p>\n<p>An earlier version of the bill did not differentiate between people who identify as part of the LGBTQ community and those in same-sex relationships, meaning people could be punished simply for identifying as LGBTQ. <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/uganda-lgbtq-bill-signed-museveni-e236013019a26a0348968e6593f04f14\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">The Associated Press<\/a> reported  However, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni returned the bill to Uganda&#8217;s national assembly in April and called for these distinctions to be made in the version of the bill he signed.<\/p>\n<p>According to The <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2023\/05\/29\/uganda-anti-homosexuality-law-lgbtq\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Washington Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In response to the law, the <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2023\/03\/1135147\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">United Nations<\/a> and groups like <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2023\/03\/17\/human-rights-watch-submission-uganda-parliament-committee-legal-and-parliamentary\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Human Rights Watch<\/a> they have condemned the law and called for its repeal. <\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a look at how politicians around the world have reacted to Uganda&#8217;s anti-gay law:<\/p>\n<h3>Uganda<\/h3>\n<p>In a <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AnitahAmong\/status\/1663126484435845120\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> Posting on Twitter after President Museveni signed the bill into law, Uganda&#8217;s parliamentary speaker Anita Among encouraged those &#8220;duty bound by law to execute the mandate given to them by the Anti-Homosexuality Act&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The people of Uganda have spoken,&#8221; he stated.<\/p>\n<h3>United States<\/h3>\n<p>On Monday, the White House released a <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2023\/05\/29\/statement-from-president-joe-biden-on-the-enactment-of-ugandas-anti-homosexuality-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> from President Joe Biden in which he called for the &#8220;immediate repeal&#8221; of the law, calling it a &#8220;tragic violation of universal human rights.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Secretary of State Antoni <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/on-the-enactment-of-ugandas-anti-homosexuality-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">The blink<\/a> also condemned the law, stating that the State Department &#8220;will develop mechanisms to support the rights of LGBTQI+ people in Uganda and to promote the accountability of Ugandan officials and others responsible for or complicit in abusing their human rights.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Blinken also told the Department to &#8220;consider deploying existing visa restriction tools against Ugandan officials and others for abuse of universal human rights, including the human rights of LGBTQI+ people.&#8221; <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/on-the-enactment-of-ugandas-anti-homosexuality-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> reads.<\/p>\n<p>Several members of Congress also called for repeal of the law, including most notably Texas Republican Ted Cruz, who called the law &#8220;horrible and wrong,&#8221; in a <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tedcruz\/status\/1663200925018726407?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1663200925018726407%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&#038;ref_url=about%3Asrcdoc\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">tweet<\/a> Monday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Any law that criminalizes homosexuality or imposes the death penalty for &#8216;aggravated homosexuality&#8217; Uganda&#8217;s law, calling it &#8220;horrific and abhorrent.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will continue to stand with 2SLGBTQI+ people and defend 2SLGBTQI+ rights at home and abroad,&#8221; he said. <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JustinTrudeau\/status\/1663287303341498369\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">he tweeted<\/a><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The president of Uganda has signed this anti-gay law.
