His three-year appointment to the position began on June 1.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The chair <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">he was gifted<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">    by Dr.  James M. McPherson &#8217;58, professor emeritus at Princeton University and renowned historian who won the 1989 Pulitzer Prize for his book, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Battle-Cry-Freedom-Civil-War\/dp\/019516895X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Battle cry of freedom: the era of civil war<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.  McPherson gave $1 million to Gustavus in 2019 to fund the chair.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Locke is the second Gustavus faculty member appointed to the position.  The first was Professor of History Greg Kaster (the position alternating between the Departments of History and Political Science) and one of the many things Kaster accomplished during his time in the McPherson Chair was to launch the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Podcast Learning for Life @ Gustavus<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Locke said he sees his appointment as an opportunity to continue Kaster&#8217;s excellent work in connecting Gustavus with the public.  \u201cI was very excited and honored to receive the McPherson Chair,\u201d she said.  \u201cIt allows me to build on my work in American political thought and, in particular, my research on the civil rights movement and post-Civil War reconstruction.  I&#8217;m spending the summer brainstorming how to get the most out of this position and the resources it offers.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Locke has been at Gustavus since 2000. She currently teaches introductory political theory, gender and politics, race and politics, as well as advanced seminars in both political science and gender, women&#8217;s, and sexuality studies related to her current research on youth policy.  in particular, the role of girls and the expectations of young activists to be political vanguards.  Locke is writing a book on this subject of &#8220;girl heroes&#8221; and recently published, with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vivo.brown.edu\/display\/alesure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ainsley LeSure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a speculative essay about a futurist <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/00905917221129610\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Girls office<\/a>.  Locke&#8217;s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">others <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gustavus.edu\/profiles\/jlocke\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">academic work so far<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  has focused primarily on the politics of shame and shamelessness, and the concept of &#8216;shameless citizenship&#8217;, culminating in his highly acclaimed book, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/books\/democracy-and-the-death-of-shame\/1A58CFD3973BE0FB2C86DB43169B8665\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Democracy and the death of shame<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.  This work has inspired transnational conversations about democratic citizenship and is its conceptual basis <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hf.uio.no\/iln\/english\/research\/projects\/minority-literary-voices-in-contemporary-scandinavia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;Citizenship Without Shame: Minority Literary Voices in Contemporary Scandinavia.&#8221; <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a multi-year project at the University of Oslo (funded by the Research Council of Norway).  Locke is also the co-editor of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psupress.org\/books\/titles\/978-0-271-03402-7.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Feminist interpretations of Alexis de Tocqueville<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">McPherson, who grew up in Saint Peter, is a longtime historian who has written more than 20 books and served as president of the American Historical Association and the Society of American Historians.  After graduating from Gustavus, he earned his doctorate from Johns Hopkins University and spent his entire academic career at Princeton, from 1962 to 2004. <\/span>When he first established the endowed chair at Gustavus, he said he did so as a thank you for the teaching and mentoring he received on the Hill.  \u201cI want to help Gustavus do for current and future students what the College did for me all those years ago,\u201d he said in 2019.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36418\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full fancy wp-image-36418\" src=\"https:\/\/news.blog.gustavus.edu\/files\/2023\/06\/McPherson-Author-Photo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-36418\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr.  James M. McPherson &#8217;58<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">University Provost and Dean Brenda Kelly said Locke&#8217;s selection for the McPherson Chair recognizes his many contributions to Gustavus and his field.  &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span>Jill Locke was selected for this endowed chair because of her outstanding academic work and experience in political theory, both nationally and internationally,&#8221; said Kelly. &#8220;This experience in<\/span><span>    feminist political theory, democratic theory, and the history of political thought influence her teaching in courses such as<\/span><span>    &#8216;Sex, power and politics&#8217;, &#8216;Political and legal thought&#8217; and &#8216;Feminist political thought&#8217;.
