VERNON, Vermont – The man accused of killing his mother at sea during a New England fishing trip died Thursday in jail while awaiting trial for murder, authorities said.<\/p>\n
Nathan Carman, 29, of Vernon, Vermont, died “on or about June 15, 2023,” the Vermont U.S. Attorney’s Office confirmed in a notice announcing the dismissal of an indictment accusing him of the death of his mother, Linda Carman.<\/p>\n
“The United States received information from the US Marshal that Carman died on or about June 15, 2023. Therefore, the assessment of charges against Carman is appropriate,” the notice said.<\/p>\n
The U.S. Marshals Service noted that Carman was being held at the Cheshire County Jail in Keene, New Hampshire, at the time of his death.<\/p>\n
Carman’s case, which attracted worldwide attention, went to trial in October.<\/p>\n
In a statement, the Carman family’s attorney said: “We were deeply saddened to learn of Nathan’s death this morning. As we process this shocking news and its impact on the tragic events of recent years, we ask for your understanding and respect in relation to our privacy”.<\/p>\n
Carman allegedly organized a Fishing trip with his mother<\/a> in September 2016, during which prosecutors say he planned to kill her and allege his boat sank and her mother disappeared in the crash.<\/p>\n It was found floating on an inflatable raft<\/a> eight days after leaving a Rhode Island marina with his mother, who was never found.<\/p>\n Prosecutors alleged that the killing was a elaborate scheme created by Carman to inherit millions<\/a> of dollars<\/p>\n The indictment also alleged that Carman fatally shot his wealthy grandfather, John Chakalos, at his home in Windsor, Conn., in 2013.
