Published:<\/span> 07:08 EDT, June 16, 2023 <\/span> | Updated:<\/span> 07:28 EDT, June 16, 2023 <\/span> <\/p>\n Swiss cyclist Gino Mader has died at the age of 26 after an accident during the fifth stage of the Tour de Suisse. <\/p>\n The cyclist was involved in a high-speed collision with the American Magnus Sheffield on the descent of the Albula pass in the Swiss Alps on Thursday.<\/p>\n The Team Bahrain Victorious rider fell into a ravine after the crash and was resuscitated at the scene before being airlifted to a hospital in Chur.<\/p>\n Mader sadly died on Friday morning after doctors had worked to save his life overnight. <\/p>\n In a statement, Bahrain Victorious said: “It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that we have to announce the death of Gino M\u00e4der. On Friday 16 June, following a very serious accident during the 5th stage of the Tour de Suisse , Gino lost the battle to recover from the serious injuries he suffered. <\/p>\n \u201cOur entire team is devastated by this tragic accident, and our thoughts and prayers are with Gino’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.<\/p>\n “Gino was an extraordinary athlete, an example of determination, a valued member of our team and the entire cycling community.<\/p>\n “His talent, dedication and passion for the sport has inspired us all.”<\/p>\n Team CEO Milan Erzen said: \u201cHe was not only a very talented cyclist, but a great person off the bike.<\/p>\n “Bahrain Victorious will run in his honor, keeping his memory alive on every road we race. We are determined to show the spirit and passion that Gino showed, and he will always remain an integral part of our team.”<\/p>\n The Tour de Suisse issued a statement on Twitter saying they were “heartbroken” by the news and also said: “Gino, you were an excellent rider but even more a wonderful person. Rest in peace.
