HYANNIS, Mass. – A smoke situation on a Steam Authority vessel sailing from Nantucket to Hyannis led to an inspection of the vessel and cancellation of the trip Monday morning, officials said.<\/p>\n
At approximately 10:30 a.m., crew members aboard the Katama discovered smoke in the ship’s bow thruster compartment as it completed its morning trip from Nantucket, Sean Driscoll, spokesman for Woods Hole, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket Steamship Authority in Falmouth, he said in a statement.<\/p>\n
No injuries were reported. There were three passengers on board at the time, Driscoll said.<\/p>\n
“Crew members immediately began firefighting procedures and contacted the Hyannis Fire Department for assistance,” Driscoll said. “When the ship arrived in Hyannis and unloaded, it was met by the Hyannis Fire Department, who investigated the situation.”<\/p>\n
No firefighting measures were required and the Hyannis Fire Department left the scene in about an hour, he said.<\/p>\n
A preliminary investigation found the smoke was coming from the exhaust or insulation, Driscoll said.<\/p>\n
The boat’s 10:45 round trip was canceled while the boat was inspected.<\/p>\n
