\u2014 Drew Karedes (@DrewKaredes) June 19, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n The search that stretches 13,000 miles under the ocean now includes the U.S. and Canadian armed forces, with C130 aircraft from both countries, Canada’s P8 aircraft and submarines and sonar buoys searching for the sub, he said.<\/p>\n “It’s a remote area and it’s challenging to conduct a search in this remote area, but we’re deploying every asset available to make sure we can locate the vessel and rescue the people on board,” he said.<\/p>\n On Monday evening, officials planned to launch C130 aircraft from the New York National Guard “to make sure we have enough assets up there,” Mauger said.<\/p>\n Also Monday evening, search teams planned to move additional vessels to the area. The Coast Guard has also been in contact with commercial vessels in the area, Mauger said.<\/p>\n Titanic <\/span>On September 1, 1985, underwater explorer Robert Ballard located the world’s most famous shipwreck. The Titanic lay largely intact at a depth of 12,000 feet off the coast of St. John’s, Newfoundland. <\/span>(Ralph White\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n The submersible was designed with a 96-hour sustainment capability “so we’re making the best use of every moment of that time to locate the ship,” he said.<\/p>\n By Monday afternoon, Mauger predicted the time frame would be “between the full 70 and 96 hours at this point.”<\/p>\n Crews are using sonar buoys to listen for sounds that can be detected in the water, he said. The company is headquartered in Everett, Washington.<\/p>\n “You’re invited to join us on a deep-sea adventure to explore 95% of the seabed that human eyes have rarely seen. Explore the site of the Titanic wreck in 2023,” from the organization web site<\/a> states<\/p>\n In a statement Monday, OceanGate Expeditions wrote that the company is “exploring and mobilizing all options to safely return the crew.”<\/p>\n “Our entire focus is on the submarine’s crew members and their families,” the statement said. “We are deeply grateful for the extensive assistance we have received from various government agencies and deepwater companies in our efforts to re-establish contact with the submersible. We are working towards the safe return of the crew members.”<\/p>\n The company also provides underwater media production services and conducts research and data collection dives.<\/p>\n “OceanGate’s fleet of 5 submersibles enables marine scientists to conduct biological, chemical, geochemical, geological and geophysical studies, visualize and sample organisms in their natural environments,” their website states.<\/p>\n Titan submersible for 5 people <\/span>The Titan 5-Person Submersible is designed to take five people to depths of 4,000 meters (13,123 feet) for site survey and inspection, research and data collection, film and media production, and deep sea hardware and software testing, according to OceanGate. <\/span>(OceanGate Inc. website)<\/p>\n In 2021 and 2022, OceanGate crews completed successful expeditions to the Titanic wreck to further document the site and its rate of decay, its website states. Eighteen expedition dives are planned for the summer of 2023 and beyond at the site of the Titanic wreck, about 380 nautical miles south of Newfoundland.<\/p>\n “Qualified explorers have the opportunity to join the expedition as mission specialist crew members whose training and mission support fees underwrite the mission, team participation scientist and his own training,” states the OceanGate website.<\/p>\n As search and rescue professionals, Mauger said, “we work very hard and our teams take it personally.”<\/p>\n The polar prince and @Rescue106<\/a> will continue to do shallow searches throughout the afternoon.<\/p>\n Two C-130 flights have been completed since @USCG<\/a> CG Air Station Elizabeth City.@hfxjrcc<\/a> Surface\/subsurface search by Canadian P8 Poseidon aircraft to continue in the morning.<\/p>\n \u2014 USCGNortheast (@USCGNortheast) June 20, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n “Our first thoughts are with the crew members and the families of those on board,” Mauger said. “We want to make sure we’ve done everything we can to locate their family members and get them home safely.”<\/p>\n This is a developing story.
