Suffolk County police are investigating a police-involved shooting that happened Wednesday in North Amityville, police said. <\/p>\n
No other details were immediately provided. <\/p>\n
Sheriff Rodney K. Harrison, who arrived on the scene shortly before 1 p.m., plans to speak to the media about the shooting on Maple Road in North Amityville at 3 p.m., police said. <\/p>\n
More than a dozen Suffolk County police vehicles are at the scene, cordoning off Maple Road and East Street in North Amityville. <\/p>\n
A crowd of spectators converged on the scene. <\/p>\n
Karina Singh, an anti-gun violence advocate who lives less than a block from the shooting, said she and her grandson were outside in the yard when she heard gunshots. <\/p>\n
“I locked the back door. I told my grandson to go to the basement and I locked all the doors,” he said. “We didn’t know who was passing through here and [my grandson] could be killed or injured.” <\/p>\n
Singh said she and her husband patrol the area at night to ensure the safety of the community. <\/p>\n
“I have worked to stop violence for years,” Singh said. “He came close to my house today. Too close to my house.” <\/p>\n
Marlene Mason, 67, has lived in the neighborhood for more than five decades and said the shooting was out of the norm. <\/p>\n
\u201cI raised my kids here,\u201d Mason said. “This is not the kind of neighborhood I’m afraid to have my kids and grandkids out in.” <\/p>\n
The site of the shooting is just a few hundred yards from a sign that reads “Stop the violence and show some love.” <\/p>\n
