A commercial-grade firework blew up in an Illinois man’s face while he was investigating why it didn’t go off.<\/p>\n

CARY, Ill. — <\/span>A powerful firework exploded in the face of an Illinois man, seriously injuring him, as he tried to determine why it hadn’t gone off, authorities said Monday.<\/p>\n

The firework was one of several commercial-grade fireworks the 58-year-old had at a gathering Sunday night in Cary, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said.<\/p>\n

“He lit a firework, which did not detonate as expected,” the sheriff’s office said. “The man looked at the tube containing the fireworks and it discharged, hitting him in the face and then exploding.”<\/p>\n

The man, whose name was not released, was in critical condition at the hospital.<\/p>\n

Other fireworks were given to a bomb squad for destruction. They typically require a permit to possess and detonate, the sheriff’s office said.<\/p>\n

The sheriff’s office said criminal charges are pending.<\/p>\n
