WORCESTER, Mass. – The gunman in Worcester is in police custody Friday night after shooting two family members and then firing at officers during a 13-hour standoff.<\/p>\n
The family members managed to escape and were taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries. None of the responding officers were hit, according to investigators.<\/p>\n
Police were called to a home on Colby Avenue just before 9 a.m. Friday.<\/p>\n
Lt. Sean Murtha said police believe a 21-year-old man shot his two family members, a man and a woman. There was no immediate word on how they were related to the suspect.<\/p>\n
When officers tried to arrest the man, he opened fire on them and ran back into the house, luckily not hitting any of them, according to Murtha.<\/p>\n
After a days-long standoff, police sent a K9 into the home forcing the suspect out and officers were able to apprehend the shooter shortly before 9:45 p.m.<\/p>\n
Hostage negotiators and a mental health doctor were brought to the scene as officers worked to make contact with the suspected shooter.<\/p>\n
The neighborhood was closed to the public and police asked everyone to avoid the area. Murtha said Worcester’s reverse 911 system was used to contact residents in the area.<\/p>\n
The incident remains under investigation.<\/p>\n
