WASHINGTON – Former President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he has been notified that he is the target of a Washington, D.C.-based grand jury investigation looking into the January 6 uprising and efforts to overturn the 2020 elections.<\/p>\n
\u201cDeranged Jack Smith, Joe Biden’s DOJ prosecutor, sent a letter (again, it was Sunday night!) stating that I am a TARGET of the Jan. 6 Grand Jury investigation and giving me about 4 very short days to report to the grand jury, which almost always means an arrest and indictment,\u201d Trump posted on his Truth Social account. <\/p>\n
Trump said that effectively means the Justice Department will issue a third indictment, charging him and arresting him. Trump added that he is Joe Biden’s “NUMBER ONE POLITICAL OPPONENT, overwhelmingly dominating him in the race for the Presidency.”<\/p>\n
It was not immediately clear what the charges are or if anyone else received a destination letter.<\/p>\n
Special counsel Jack Smith, appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland in November, has led an extensive investigation in the nearly eight months since. Smith won an indictment before a Florida grand jury last month, charging Trump with 37 counts related to his handling of classified documents and alleged efforts to obstruct that investigation.<\/p>\n
