A tornado warning has been issued for Worcester County on Friday.<\/p>\n
The warning is expected to be in effect until 5:00 p.m. The towns of Barre and Petersharm are under alert.<\/p>\n
Hail is also possible, according to the National Weather Service.<\/p>\n
Here are 10 tornado safety tips:<\/p>\n
1) You have several ways to get notices<\/p>\n
2) Once a tornado warning is issued, go to a basement for shelter. If you don’t have a basement, find an interior room away from windows. The idea is to put as many walls between you and the outside as possible.<\/p>\n
3) Debris is the #1 killer of tornadoes. If you have time, put on a bike helmet. If not, try to protect yourself from the debris by using a mattress or pillow.<\/p>\n
4) If possible, try to avoid the southwest corner of your home when seeking shelter. Most returning storms will come from this direction.<\/p>\n
5) Do NOT try to open windows to equalize the pressure. This is a myth that will only give you a short time to get yourself on the safe side.<\/p>\n
6) If you are on the road and see a tornado, pull over and seek shelter in a sturdy building. Try to avoid large stores that offer little protection due to the material the roofs are made of.<\/p>\n
7) If you are on the road and there is no shelter, look for a ditch or a low area, lie down and cover your head.<\/p>\n
8) If you are on the road, you can also roll over the vehicle and put your head under the windshield. Make sure your seat belt is on.<\/p>\n
9) Have an emergency kit and a plan before the tornado strikes.<\/p>\n
10) Avoid walking outside after the tornado touches down as power lines may be down. Wait for emergency officials.<\/p>\n
