HOPKINTON, Mass. – The body of a missing 21-year-old man was recovered from a lake in Hopkinton Saturday morning after an extensive search.<\/p>\n
According to the Hopkinton Police Department, emergency officials first responded to Sandy Beach on Maspenock Lake on Friday night around 8 pm for a report of a swimmer who never returned to shore.<\/p>\n
Police said the missing swimmer, whose name has not been released, was in the water with a friend when they went beyond the established safe swimming area at the beach and continued toward Lake Maspenock. Upon reaching the beach, the returning swimmer realized his friend was missing and called 911.<\/p>\n
Hopkinton firefighters and police officers began searching the shoreline with the department’s sonar-equipped rescue boats. Crews searched the area until midnight and eventually called off the search until Saturday morning due to bad weather.<\/p>\n
Divers, firefighters and a K9 team located the swimmer’s body in 12 feet of water about 90 feet from shore along the buoy line about 8:10 a.m. Saturday, according to police.<\/p>\n
The Coroner’s Office is working to determine the cause of death and a positive identification.<\/p>\n
Following the incident, the department asked swimmers to follow safety guidelines issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>.<\/p>\n Always use the buddy system. Don’t swim alone. Be aware of local weather conditions, which can change quickly.
