HOLLISTON, Mass. – Crews responded to a Holliston home Monday afternoon for an explosion.<\/p>\n
Holliston police say the explosion occurred around 3:55 pm inside a home on Westfield Drive. Arriving officers found two men, ages 59 and 61, in the front yard with significant burns to their bodies, officials said.<\/p>\n
“I saw their injuries were serious and I just wanted to be helpful, so they wouldn’t get hurt any more,” said Kristen Mahoney, a neighbor. “It was very scary, and I’m still a bit bewildered by the whole situation.”<\/p>\n
They were transported to an area hospital by medical helicopter and then flown to trauma hospitals in Boston. His condition is currently unknown.<\/p>\n
Responding crews say there was a light smoke condition in the home but no visible flames.<\/p>\n
A preliminary report indicated that the homeowner and an electrician were injured after an explosion in the basement. The two were allegedly troubleshooting oil-burning equipment that wasn’t working properly after Friday’s electrical storm.<\/p>\n
“Lightning storms can cause power surges in many neighborhoods,” said Fire Chief Michael Cassidy. If a home is damaged by an electrical surge, it is imperative that homeowners contact an electrician to inspect any damaged wiring or fire hazards that may have been created.<\/p>\n
Power was cut to the home and as a precaution, as well as the propane tank outside the hose. After city inspection services gave the “all clear,” the property was secured.<\/p>\n
“We are grateful that both individuals received immediate attention from the police, our fire and EMS personnel and our mutual aid partners, in accordance with pre-hospital treatment protocols,” Chief Cassidy said. “The availability of air medical transport and nearby burn centers verified by the American Burn Association and the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma will hopefully lead to positive outcomes for these individuals. They are very fortunate, but it will be a long recovery period for them.”<\/p>\n
Another neighbor, Julie Hermann, expressed concern about the duo. “I just hope they’re okay. I heard they’ve been airlifted out, so worry about their well-being.”<\/p>\n
“I’m devastated for them,” said Fran Gorman, a family friend. “They’re amazing, they’re wonderful people.”<\/p>\n
The incident remains under investigation. Eversource, as well as Ashland and Medway fire crews attended the scene.<\/p>\n
No further information was immediately available.<\/p>\n
