Politics makes me feel like I don’t belong

These days there seems to be a long supply of political outrage chasing a small supply of perspective. I’m trying to figure out where I fit in. I consider myself reflective. But obviously thinking about options, alternatives and solutions is pointless if I don’t move forward. At this point, I’m more thoughtful than helpful. Like a lot of people, including most of my friends, I’m looking for some inspiration. The middle-class liberal/progressive inclination—let me speak for my brothers—is to write a check and go back to inertia. We have had too many expectations that have come to nothing. We are…

How a storied phrase became a partisan battleground

Juan Ciscomani, a Republican who washed cars to help his Mexican immigrant father pay the bills and is now running for Congress in Arizona, has relied on a simple three-word phrase throughout his campaign: “the dream American”. For him, the American Dream, a nearly 100-year-old idea loaded with meaning and memory, has become not so much something to aspire to but to defend against attack. President Biden and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi are, he says in an ad, “destroying the american dream” with “a border crisis, rising inflation and schools that don’t teach the good things about America.” For decades,…

‘Little woman’ behind the wheel – Medford News, Weather, Sports, Breaking News

It wasn’t the most monumental historical event in southern Oregon, but Ina Olwell should have expected more than a brief Mail Tribune paragraph. Even a Pendleton newspaper gave it two. After all, the daughter of Charles Ray of Gold Ray Dam fame, the man who had helped bring electricity to the valley, was also married to one of the most prominent real estate developers in all of Jackson County. In typical early 1900s fashion, Ina’s exploits were reported almost anonymously on behalf of her husband: Mrs. John Olwell, in Pendleton, and simply Mrs. Olwell in the Tribune. In the early…
