For Republican governors, all economic success is local WGN Radio 720

WASHINGTON (AP) — Gov. Greg Abbott, R-Texas, often bashes President Joe Biden for high inflation and a looming recession, a popular GOP argument heading into the November election. But inflation is even worse in Texas’ major cities than it is nationwide. Government figures show inflation is 10.2 percent in the Houston area and 9.4 percent around Dallas, higher than the latest national average of 8.5 percent. Abbott and other GOP leaders make a paradoxical argument that the US economy has sunk into a recession, but Republican-led parts of the country are still booming. These officials blame Biden’s policies for skyrocketing…

Woster: The Changing Tides of South Dakota Politics – Mitchell Republic

I laughed the other day when I saw a political spot naming state Rep. Jamie Smith as one of the most liberal members of the Legislature. Well, he’s a Democrat, and I think he’s interested in education and social progress. I guess that makes him a liberal in South Dakota. But in this state, there isn’t much competition for the title of most liberal, especially in the Legislature. It’s loaded with Republicans, and most of them range from fairly conservative to really conservative. I used to report on the Legislature for the newspaper. I did it for 40 years. I…

A new political group in The Villages

To the editor: I think it’s time for a new political group in The Villages. Reading the messages and letters here, it is clear that there is a strong, vocal, literate, and intelligent group of people within The Villages who still believe in a strong, democratic (small d) and rational, violence-free America, asking a civil war and angry rhetoric so evident on the airwaves, on the internet and in the media. This group, from my reading and impression, would consist of Independents, Democrats, and classic Republicans, either reformed or alienated by the MAGA mob or even some totally alienated by…

FBI Director Christopher Wray tried to keep the bureau out of politics. Then came Mar-a-Lago Search.

OMAHA, Neb.—FBI Director Christopher Wray stood in front of huge paintings of an eagle and an American flag at the field office here last week to talk about how agents had used an Irish tip to help save a local hospital from a ransomware attack. It was the kind of threat that Mr. Wray has made it a priority of the office to counter. But the first two questions from the press were about former President Donald Trump. Two days earlier, 1,500 miles away in Florida, FBI agents had seized more than two dozen boxes from Mr. Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home…

GOP spending under fire as Senate hopefuls seek rescue

Comment on this story comment Republican Senate hopefuls are being battered by airwaves across the country as their national campaign fund drops ads and runs out of money, leading some campaign advisers to question where all the money went and to demand an audit of the committee’s finances, according to Republican strategists. involved in the discussions. In a highly unusual move, the National Republican Senatorial Committee canceled about $10 million worth of reservations this week, including in the critical states of Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Arizona.
