Republican hopefuls rush to defend the embattled Marine

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis urged the nation to show Daniel Penny that “America has got his back.” Former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley called on the governor of New York to pardon Penny, and biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy donated $10,000 to her legal defense fund. Republican presidential hopefuls have lined up to support Penny, a 24-year-old U.S. Navy veteran who was caught on video pinning down a fellow subway passenger in the city of New York. The passenger, Jordan Neely, 30, later died of neck compression, according to the medical examiner. Penny has been charged with involuntary manslaughter. His lawyers…

Eric Adams’ criticism of Biden aides angers and reveals the democratic rift

The Democratic Party is following a standard strategy as President Biden seeks re-election: Do not publicly criticize him under any circumstances, unless he helps Donald J. Trump or one of his acolytes win back the White House for the Republicans. The only Democrat who seems to have missed the mark is Mayor Eric Adams of New York City. Mr. Adams has taken almost every opportunity in recent weeks to publicly blame Mr. Biden or his administration for the influx of migrants into New York from border states, many of them on buses sent by Republican governors. His eagerness to point…

Three recent candidates for Abilene City Council seats came together in more ways than one.

Tax exempt status. Involved in politics. Churches cannot have both

Ryan Goodwin, James Sargent and Scott Beard received open support from several local churches. Both they and their supporters often tried to frame the opposition as those who believe our government should be completely free of Christian influence on the basis of the separation of church and state. As someone who opposed all three candidates, I find this characterization misleading. As a principle, the separation of church and state serves primarily to protect the church from…

McKissick has led the party since 2017 in a state where the GOP holds every statewide elected office, all but one seat in the US House and control of both legislative chambers. He defeated three rivals. Party officials said in a statement that under McKissick’s leadership, “more Republicans than ever before” had won elections. None of South Carolina’s presidential…

Chemical fire calls for protective order in Houston

Houston officials issued a precautionary shelter-in-place order Saturday morning after a chemical fire broke out at 6200 Royalton Dr., near the Bellaire area. The order covers a 1.5-mile radius, according to a tweet from the city’s office of emergency management.
