Supreme Court strikes down Biden’s student loan debt forgiveness program

The Supreme Court on Friday struck down the Biden administration’s program to forgive the student loan debt of more than 43 million American borrowers. In a 6-3 decisionwritten by Chief Justice John Roberts, the court ruled that the Department of Education exceeded its authority when it decided to write off more than $400 billion in federal student loan debt. The program, which invoked emergency powers because of economic hardship caused by the pandemic, would have written off $10,000 in student debt for all borrowers who earned less than $125,000 and up to $20,000 for borrowers who also received Pell scholarships….

Breaking News: Supreme Court Takes Down Biden’s Plan to Eliminate $400 Million in Student Loans

This Supreme Court ruling has dealt a major blow to President Biden’s efforts to ease America’s student loan debt burden. It unequivocally underscores the critical role of Congress in shaping policy to address the growing student loan crisis. The 6-3 decision, with a majority of conservative justices, leaves borrowers on the left sidelined for repayments that are expected to resume in late August under a schedule originally set by the administration and included in the deal to raise the debt ceiling. Supreme Court kills Biden’s student loan debt relief plan

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Friday struck down President Joe Biden’s student loan debt relief plan, meaning the long-delayed proposal aimed at implementing a campaign promise will not go into effect. The justices, divided 6-3 along ideological lines, ruled in one of the two cases that the program was an illegal exercise of presidential power because it had not been explicitly approved by Congress. The court rejected the Biden administration’s arguments that the plan was legal under a 2003 law called the Higher Education Student Aid Opportunity Act, or HEROES Act. The law says the government can provide relief…

Supreme Court rules for designer who won’t make wedding websites for gay couples

WASHINGTON (AP) — In a defeat for gay rights, the Supreme Court’s conservative majority ruled Friday that a Christian graphic artist who wants to design wedding websites can refuse to work with same-sex couples. The court ruled 6-3 for designer Lorie Smith despite a Colorado law that prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation, race, gender and other characteristics. Smith had argued that the law violates their right to freedom of expression. Smith’s opponents warned that a win for her would allow several businesses to discriminate, refusing to serve black, Jewish or Muslim customers, interracial or interfaith couples or immigrants. But…

BRASILIA, June 30 (Reuters) – Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro’s political career appeared all but dead on Friday as the country’s federal electoral court appeared poised to conclude a trial that could leave him ineligible for public office for nearly a decade If a majority of the seven judges on the Brasilia court find that he abused his power by summoning ambassadors to make unsubstantiated claims about Brazil’s voting system ahead of last year’s vote, Bolsonaro will be deemed ineligible to hold public office until 2030 So far, three judges have voted to convict the far-right nationalist of abuse of…
