Huntingburg woman faces backlash for political signage

HOUSE IN HUNTING

HUNTINGBURG, Ind. (WEHT) — The First Amendment to the US Constitution protects “free speech,” and a tri-state resident says he’ll make the most of his rights.

Tammy Mundy of Huntingburg has displayed many signs in the yard of her residence expressing her views on the political positions she has taken.

“I’m not going to let them down,” Mundy said. “I have windows, I have a garage, I will put them in my house if necessary.”

While she says that some like her, she signs that others don’t agree with them.

“The city of Huntingburg came and knocked on my door,” Mundy said. “I wasn’t here at home so they came to my work and asked me about my signs and I said I wasn’t going to drop them,” he added. “I said it’s my first amendment and I stand by them and I said the more complaints there are, the more signs I’m going to put up.”

A Huntingburg resident who wished to remain anonymous says he spoke to the city council about the situation, but was told there wasn’t much they could do about it at this time.

“It just paints a bad picture of the town of Huntingburg, and of course the school is gone, but when kids ride the school bus and see the FK Biden signs and all that, it’s not a good image”.

Appellate attorney Byron Henry, a partner at Scheef & Stone, says political speech is the most protected speech and is sometimes difficult to regulate.

“It’s a tough standard,” Henry said. “I know it seems absurd sometimes, but luckily that’s the benefit of the First Amendment. You hold the government to a standard and it protects all of us when we choose to say something.”

Mundy says at one point she had some signs stolen, prompting her to add more cameras to surround her property. Mundy says there are some residents that she.

“So many people come into my driveway that I don’t know thank me for putting up these signs, thank you for holding up our country,” Mundy explained.
