Progressives are launching their own campaign to change school board seats across the country

A progressive group plans to funnel hundreds of thousands of dollars into an effort to elect hundreds of left-leaning school board members across the country, underscoring how these local races are increasingly drawing attention from advocacy groups and well-known politicians. The Progressive Change Campaign Committee (PCCC) launched the Save Our School Boards campaign on Friday to push more than 200 school board candidates lined up in the upcoming cycle. The group hopes to raise $450,000 to help with ballot signatures, the budget, grassroots support and more. Tennessee first state to tax sports betting by handling, not revenue

Starting next month, Tennessee will become the first state to tax sports betting based on the total amount of money wagered, rather than revenue collected. Starting July 1, the state will impose a handling tax of 1.85% to replace the current 20% income tax. Lawmakers approved the change earlier this year. Just under $280 million in total bets were made in Tennessee during the month of May, generating $7.1 million in tax revenue for the state. Under the new law, licensed Tennessee sports books will also not have to meet a 10% retention requirement. The Tennessee Sports Wagering Council adopted…

No one embodies our country’s political offspring more than Lindsey Graham

I knew things were different the morning after Barack Obama announced that the Navy SEALs had hunted down Osama bin Laden. In my coastal South Carolina neighborhood, in a county where the American flag flies proudly from many front porches, an area that years later would vote for Donald Trump twice by wide margins, the celebration was subdued. Although it felt more like a mourning than a celebration, my neighbors weren’t upset that Laden was dead, just that it was a Democrat who had killed him. It wasn’t like the joy that had erupted spontaneously outside the White House even…

We are one month into the DeSantis presidential campaign. How’s it going?

It was meant to be a historic event: a major presidential candidate announcing his bid for the White House during a live social media Q&A with one of the richest and most powerful men in tech. In contrast, Gov. Ron DeSantis’ May 24 Twitter Spaces chat with Elon Musk almost fizzled out before it began, with critics pouncing: It was “amateur hour,” to “debacle,” to “fiasco,” to “to melt,” to “total failure“with a”a small, small audience.” “Wow! The launch of DeSanctus TWITTER is a DISASTER!” former president Donald Trump he wrote on his Truth Social platform, using one of his…

Pennsylvania Senate passes bill to expand treatment for sexual assault survivors

Seeking help as a survivor of sexual assault can be a difficult experience. Finding care that addresses a patient’s individual needs without contributing to the stigma surrounding sexual assault is a difficult process. Pennsylvania lawmakers are trying to improve that. A bill passed in the Senate aims to give survivors easier access to treatment by expanding SANE programs, or sexual assault nurse examiners. The law, titled “The Sexual Assault Emergency Services Act,” passed the Senate unanimously. The act will fund hospitals that want to establish SANE programs that give survivors more opportunities to seek patient-centered care. Under the SANE program,…

A year after the Dobbs ruling, abortion has changed the political landscape

One year ago this week, the Supreme Court issued its Dobbs decision, which meant that millions of Americans were no longer guaranteed access to abortion care. It was a political earthquake, and in many ways the ground is still shaking. For decades, the politics surrounding abortion had been pretty well established, with the Roe v Wade decision making abortion legal nationwide. Republicans wanted Roe to fall, and that motivated their voters. Democrats, on the other hand, simply weren’t as fired up about the issue, and Democratic politicians often shied away from talking about abortion. But after Roe was overturned, politics…
