Ambulance overturns in Pinellas Park accident, 5 hospitalized

PINELLAS PARK – An ambulance overturned after a collision with a sedan Friday, according to Pinellas Park police.

The crash happened at 118th Avenue N. and 49th Street around 4:46 p.m. Photos from the Pinellas Park Police Department’s Twitter account show an ambulance on its side, along with a BMW with a crushed front end.

The ambulance was driving south on 49th Street and the BMW was driving east on 118th Avenue. When the two vehicles reached the intersection, they collided, the department said in a news release Friday evening.

The ambulance’s lights and sirens were on at the time of the crash, according to Sgt. Roxanne Pohl, spokeswoman for the department.

Southbound lanes are closed for investigation and cleanup.

Five people were in the ambulance at the time of the crash: one patient in critical condition and four paramedics, Pohl said. All five were sent to Bayfront Hospital in St. Petersburg for treatment, where the patient remains in critical condition and paramedics are listed in stable condition.

The driver of the sedan and a passenger refused medical attention, Pohl said.

No charges have been filed at this time, the statement said. The investigation is ongoing.
