Breaking news: Volcanic eruption on the Reykjanes peninsula

Magma has reached the surface at Geldingalir on the Reykjanes peninsula. For the first time since last September, when lava stopped flowing from Fagradalsfjall, the tension has given rise to the possibility of magma erupting.

Einar Hjörleifsson, specialist in Natural Hazards from the Meteorological Office, confirmed that there had been a volcanic eruption in a 100m depression of Merardalir by Fagranesfjall.

The Met Office is now investigating the matter and putting appropriate protocol in place.

The eruption can be clearly seen on the mbl.is webcam of the area.

Updates will follow.

Here is the live webcam of the area.
