Manitowoc County Sheriff Dan Hartwig announced Wednesday, August 3 that the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a report of animal neglect.
In the statement, Hartwig says the Sheriff’s Office received information from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) in late July about possible hoarding and neglect of rabbits, poultry and other animals at a township farm of Schleswig.
Hartwig goes on to say that investigators obtained probable cause and obtained a search warrant for the property. The search warrant was executed on Tuesday morning, August 2, and numerous rabbits and poultry were removed from the property.
The statement says that the owners are cooperating with law enforcement. Hartwig says this is an ongoing investigation and information will be provided as the investigation continues.
Hartwig also states in the release that the Lakeshore Humane Society is assisting with the temporary housing, care and possible relocation of the animals removed from the property. The Lakeshore Humane Society is asking for volunteers and donations to care for the animals. Additional information can be found at https://www.lakeshorehumane.org/ways-to-give/make-a-donation.
Hartwig thanks PETA, the Lakeshore Humane Society, the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection’s Division of Animal Health (DATCAP) and numerous volunteers who helped with the incident.
