AUTO POLO FEATURE AT THE COUNTY FAIR
Auto polo, the exciting field sport played by expert automobile drivers in light cars equipped with a regulated polo mallet, may be one of the entertainment features of the Jackson County Fair program this autumn if the negotiations that are being carried out between the directors and a car. the polo troupe is complete.
It is the intention of the directors to provide a different amusement for each day of the fair, in addition to the regular program of races, &c. A means of entertainment that will be properly taken care of each day of the exhibition will be a lot of fine band music. The directors realized that no matter how good the exhibits and other features of the fair are, band music is essential to keep the audience in a festive mood.
4,000 ACRES BURNS IN ASHLAND DISTRICT
Ashland, August 4th. – A desolate-looking patch of 4,000 acres or more east of the city in the vicinity of Mineral Springs is the result of what started as a grass fire, which grew out of control Wednesday afternoon . The property involved included acreage on the Murphy, Roman, Chapmap, McAllister and other ranches.
Extending from grass to brush, several kilometers of fence were also destroyed. The buildings on the Barron and Tucker ranches have a close call, while the haystacks were saved only by superhuman effort, the fire spreading so far before effective help could be summoned. It was Thursday morning before it was brought under control. Reports vary as to the cause. One claim is that a spark from a blacksmith’s forge started the fire, and another that a worker dropped a red-hot iron on the grass, both reports assuming that the accident occurred as a result of the operations of ‘landing of the irrigation projects that extend throughout the territory. .
LOCAL AND STAFF
The Jackson County Fair advertises itself liberally through the use of license plates above the regular license plates. The first of these plates was presented in Roseburg by JC Thompson of the California-Oregon Power Company, who says that all of the company’s cars and trucks will be equipped within a few days. — Roseburg News Review.
