Suspect in custody after wreck, fatal shooting at busy intersection in Lowell, police say
LOWELL, NC – Police have released the identity of a victim who was killed in a shooting at a busy intersection in Lowell Thursday night.
Officers swarmed the area of Wilkinson Boulevard and Redbud Drive after police say there was a multi-vehicle crash and shooting.
Police were called to an accident with injuries shortly after 7:00 p.m. When officers arrived at the scene, they found a person who had been shot. Authorities confirmed that Jose Antonia Jiménez Quinones, 52, of Gastonia, died of the shooting at the scene.
Other victims involved in the accident were taken to a local hospital for treatment.
“The people that are here, unfortunately, were in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Capt. Billy Downey of the Gaston County Police Department. “They are witnesses, they do not intervene in any way. We just can’t let them go until we have all our shots and measurements, shots and everything.”
During the investigation, Gastonia Police found a juvenile suspect fleeing the area. Eventually, officers were able to arrest them and charge them with second degree murder.
“Due to the circumstances surrounding this ongoing investigation, no further information can be released at this time,” Gaston County police said in a news release.
The scene was cleared at 2 a.m. Friday.
