Man fleeing troopers arrested after entering Lake Mansfield – Hartford Courant

A Willington man who allegedly fled from state police in a stolen car, including by jumping into a lake in Mansfield, was arrested Sunday, state police said.

The case began when early Sunday morning officers were investigating a report of a stolen vehicle; a robbery that allegedly occurred in Ashford around 12:45 p.m., state police said.

Troopers were at a home on Ashford Center Road in Ashford when they saw the stolen white Ford Mustang on Ashford Center Road, also known as Route 44, state police said.

Officers identified the driver as Jacob Cormier, 22, of Willington, state police said. Troopers lost sight of the Mustang after the vehicle sped away, state police said. However, Troop C received several 911 calls reporting that “a white Ford Mustang had been involved in a collision” on Storrs Road in Mansfield and the driver had fled, state police said.

“A perimeter was established and a K9 track was made. Cormier was located in Mansfield Hollow State Park, but engaged troopers in a foot pursuit and fled into Lake Mansfield Hollow,” state police said in a communicated “A short time later, Cormier swam to shore where he was taken into custody without incident.”

State police said Cormier was transported to Troop C and charged with: evading responsibility resulting in property damage, speeding in an attempt to elude or elude an officer, failure to maintain lane, interfering with a officer, investigate 2nd degree criminal, first…degree larceny, 3rd degree criminal mischief and possession of a controlled substance 2nd offense.

Cormier was held in lieu of $100,000 cash/surety bond and is scheduled to appear in GA-19, Rockville Superior Court on Monday, Aug. 8, 2022, state police said.
