An explosion in Thornton Heath has destroyed a home and rescue services fear for the life of a young woman who is believed to be trapped under the rubble.

The explosion, which happened at around 7am on Monday August 8 in the London suburb, saw neighbors Kutoya Kukanda, 50, and Delroy Simms, 62, rescue three children from the House.

But they said they believed a sister girl aged about four or five was still trapped inside the building. They added that they believed the mother had run away and was safe.

The house next door is said to have been badly damaged by the blast with a cordon set up by police.

Neighbors say they reported a strong smell of gas in the area two weeks ago and some said they had felt dizzy and sick for the past two days.

It is not known if authorities investigated the smell of gas, with residents concerned that more explosions could occur.

Neighbors have told local media it was “the biggest explosion you’ll ever hear”, with the blast shattering nearby windows.

Emergency services are believed to be still at the scene with neighboring residents still not allowed back into their properties.

There is also no news on the safety of the feared young woman trapped after the Thornton Heath blast left a gap between terraced houses.
