A Meriden father accidentally shot his 17-year-old son Friday afternoon while allegedly teaching the boy about firearms, police said.
The teenager was shot near his shoulder with a 9 mm handgun around 3:05 p.m. Friday on Forest Avenue, according to the Meriden Police Department.
The boy’s father accidentally shot him while “he had been showing him the gun,” police said.
“The father planned to acclimatize his son to firearms in order to begin firearms training at a local gun range in the near future,” the police department said in a statement.
The boy was taken to the hospital by ambulance and then transferred to a trauma center by Life Star, police said.
Police were still at the scene of the shooting Friday evening and the investigation was ongoing. No one else was injured in the shooting, police said.
No further information was immediately available.
