A calf seen attacked by two wolves in Lake County’s Winter Rim area was later found dead.

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife said that on the morning of Sunday, August 14, a motorist who saw a calf being attacked scared off the wolves.

Later that day, a rancher found the dead, 500-pound, five-month-old calf in a public grazing allotment.

An investigation found bite scratches up to three inches long and a quarter inch wide on both elbows and on both hind legs above the hocks, with associated tissue damage up to four inches deep. According to the report, the injuries confirmed the motorist’s account of a wolf attack.

Predation was attributed to wolves known as LAS13 and OR115. This Known Wolf Activity Area, or AKWA, runs east of Fort Klamath through Beatty and north of Chemult south to Klamath Falls. The Upper Deschutes AWKA in Deschutes County was added earlier this year in July.
