Police are investigating a serious crash involving two tractor-trailers that injured two men and closed Interstate 84 East Monday morning, according to Connecticut State Police.
Police were called just before 7:30 a.m. to a crash near Exit 65 between two trailers.
A tractor-trailer operated by a 45-year-old Maryland man was parked on the right shoulder near Exit 65. A second tractor-trailer driven by a 44-year-old Georgia man entered the right shoulder and struck the rear of the vehicle. first by pushing him into a light pole, according to state police.
The Maryland man was taken to Hartford Hospital with minor injuries. The Georgia man was trapped in his vehicle and had to be extricated. He was taken to Hartford Hospital via LifeStar with serious injuries, according to state police.
According to NBC Connecticut, crews worked for an hour and 15 minutes to extricate the driver.
One firefighter was also taken to the hospital, officials told NBC Connecticut.
Deputies were investigating the crash, as well as officials from DEEP and the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection.
DEEP estimated that about 25 gallons of motor oil and diesel fuel may have been spilled in the crash. DEEP staff and their contractor apply a substance to dry and solidify the spill. The substances were then cleaned up once the trucks were removed from the scene, according to DEEP media relations director Paul Copleman.
