HAMBURG, NY – After a legal challenge to the new district maps, New Yorkers are now voting in the primary election runoff.
In this round, candidates Nick Langworthy and Carl Paladino face off in the 23rd Congressional District Republican primary.
Paladino has been a controversial figure in Western New York politics for years, including making racist remarks directed at former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama. Langworthy has served as the Erie County chairman of the New York Republican State Committee since 2019. Both self-described Trump loyalists have traded blows in several political TV and radio ads.
The current 23rd District will also see a special election pitting Democrat Max Della Pia against Republican Joe Sempolinski to fill out the remaining four months of Congressman Tom Reed, who resigned in May.
Attorney Benjamin Carlisle will face longtime incumbent Sean Ryan in the Democratic race for District 61. Republicans in the new District 24 have a choice between incumbent Rep. Claudia Tenney and Mario Fratto, an attorney of Geneva
Finally, incumbent Congressman Brian Higgins faces a rare challenge to his seat from his own party. Democrat Emin Eddie Egriu is running in the newly drawn 26th District congressional race that covers Buffalo, Niagara Falls and much of Niagara County.
The polls close on Tuesday at 9 p.m.
