A powerful tornado ripped through central North Carolina for more than a dozen miles Wednesday, destroying homes and injuring residents, officials said. The National Weather Service said early Thursday that a preliminary damage survey indicates the tornado was an EF3, with maximum winds of up to 150 miles per hour. It is the first EF3 tornado ever observed in central North Carolina in the month of July and the strongest tornado for this time of year on record in the state. A 40-year-old woman who was one of three people involved in a single-vehicle crash in the Holden area has died from her injuries, the second fatality from Tuesday night’s crash, according to authorities Angela Ziegler, of Holden, died after she and two other people were ejected from the car that crashed into a tree on Highway 441 in LA, Louisiana State Police said in a statement Thursday. MCALESTER, Okla. – Oklahoma executed Jemaine Cannon at 10:13 a.m. Thursday. Cannon, 51, was sentenced to death in 1996 after a Tulsa County jury convicted Cannon of the 1995 death of Sharonda White Clark. He is the state’s second death row inmate executed in 2023 and the ninth person put to death by Oklahoma since the state resumed executions in October 2021 after a nearly seven-year moratorium. The body of a swimmer who went missing after jumping into the Amite River on Wednesday was found late Thursday morning, authorities said. Divers recovered the body around 11:45 a.m. Thursday, about 19 hours after the man jumped into the river.
