Newspaper comics give readers a needed break from hard news and political opinions
Jerry Davich 219-853-2563 The large blue envelope arrived at The Times office with a two-word message written on the front: DO NOT DOUBLE. Inside were four colorful cartoons, each on a separate piece of paper and each with the same title: “One More Day.” The cartoons are original, not copies. One of them showed a father leaving the house as his son looked on near the front door. “Just leaving because you don’t know when to shut up,” the caption reads. One of four “Just Another Day” comics created and presented by Logan Howell, a 22-year-old aspiring cartoonist from Hammond….

Trump is winning over Republican rivals in his home states
CNN — Do you know who is in third place in the 2024 Republican presidential race? This may seem like an odd question given that the two leading candidates, former President Donald Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, are the only ones who average more than 5% nationally. The answer, however, is former Vice President Mike Pence and former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley, both tied at just 4%. More troubling for Haley, who is participating in a CNN town hall Sunday evening, and other candidates outside the top two is the apparent nationalization of the GOP primary process this…

The American middle still exists in politics. We just saw him in St. Louis.
Joe Biden was not my first choice for president. When the 2020 race started, I preferred Sen. Elizabeth Warren or maybe Sen. Cory Booker. But his candidacies dwindled and it soon became clear that Biden would be the firebrand to defeat Donald Trump. As president, Biden has been somewhat boring but consistent. It doesn’t inspire, but it doesn’t shy away from the great moments either. Last week, the president had one of his best moments, and it gives me hope for a nation that revels in its divisions. Biden and House Republican Speaker Kevin McCarthy designed a bipartisan vote of…

Chuck Todd is leaving NBC’s political panel show ‘Meet the Press’ and is being replaced by Kristen Welker
NEW YORK (AP) — Chuck Todd said Sunday he is leaving “Meet the Press” after a tumultuous decade of nearly moderating NBC’s political panel showwho will be replaced in the coming months by Kristen Welker. Todd, 51, told viewers he had “seen too many friends and family let their work consume them before it was too late” and had promised his family he wouldn’t. Todd has often been an online punching bag for critics, including Donald Trump, during a polarizing time, and there were rumors that his time on the show would be cut short when its executive producer was…

When then-Vice President Mike Pence spoke outside Baltimore at the 2020 Republican National Convention, he declared, “America needs four more years of President Donald Trump in the White House.” This week, when Pence officially announces that he is running for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024, he will argue that he, not Trump, deserves four more years in the White House. Pence will enter a growing field of contenders seeking the GOP nomination, creating a historic rarity in which two former classmates become rivals. Pence’s allies see an affable candidate with a consistent conservative record who can carry out the…

Trump praises Kim Jong Un; DeSantis, Pence and other GOP challengers jump
WASHINGTON − Republican presidential candidates and other Republican leaders put aside their reluctance to criticize Donald Trump this weekend after the former president took on an unusual political topic: North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un. Trump’s praise of Kim for a new position at the World Health Organization drew attacks from Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former Vice President Mike Pence, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and other Republicans who said the former president’s foreign policy is reckless. “I was surprised to see that,” DeSantis told reporters in Iowa, where several GOP candidates were stumped over the weekend. DeSantis condemned…

Chuck Todd to leave ‘Meet the Press’
Chuck Todd said Sunday he was stepping down from NBC’s “Meet the Press” after nine years in the moderator’s chair and would be succeeded by the network’s chief White House correspondent, Kristen Welker. Speaking at the conclusion of the show on Sunday, Mr Todd, 50, said he was aware that many leaders “overstay their welcome” and that he would rather leave “a little too soon than stay a little a little too long.” “I’ve let work consume me for almost 30 years,” said Mr. Todd, according to a copy of his prepared remarks. “I can’t remember the last time I…
