RICHMOND HILL, Queens — Four people were shot and one person was killed by a man on an illegal motorcycle in several related shootings in Brooklyn and Queens.
The first shooting happened around 11 a.m. Saturday in Cypress Hills. Brooklyn, where the gunman shot a man. Police say he then shot three other people in Queens.
The suspect then shot a man in the back around 11:30 a.m. Saturday near a nail salon at 108th Street and Jamaica Avenue in Richmond Hill. The 87-year-old victim was pronounced dead.
Less than ten minutes later, the suspect opened fire again on 134th Street, shooting a man.
Then there was another shooting at 11:35 a.m. at 126th Street and Hillside Avenue where a man was hit in the face. He is in critical condition.
Two minutes later, a 63-year-old man was shot in the shoulder.
The suspect was arrested by police shortly after 1pm on Sutphin Blvd. and 94th Ave., police say. Officers recognized the suspect because an image, called a “critical message,” was sent to each police officer’s cell phone.
“A firearm was recovered from the scooter – a 9mm handgun and an extended magazine. Given the violence this person was going to carry out, I want to give my deepest thanks to all the men and women of the police of New York,” said Police Commissioner Edward Caban
The motive for the shooting is unknown, but police officials believe all of the shootings appear to be random.
Police have not released the suspect’s name. They say he had a prior arrest for a traffic violation.
