AI presents a political danger for 2024 with a threat of voter fraud
WASHINGTON (AP) – Tech-inclined computer engineers and political scientists have warned for years that cheap and powerful artificial intelligence tools would soon allow anyone to create fake images, videos and audio realistic enough to deceive voters and maybe influence an election. The synthetic images that emerged were often crude, unconvincing and expensive to produce, especially when other types of disinformation were so cheap and easy to spread on social media. The threat posed by AI and so-called deepfakes always seemed a year or two away. Not more. Sophisticated generative AI tools can now create cloned human voices and hyper-realistic images,…

Immigration is still fueling Trump’s political future
The mess at the border continues to benefit Trump. Photo: Mario Tama/Getty Images Of all the issues that fueled Donald Trump’s unlikely takeover of the Republican Party in 2016, immigration and the closely associated feelings of xenophobia were arguably the most important. Yes, many rank-and-file Republicans, especially in the increasingly dominant category of non-college-educated white voters, were then unhappy with the “globalist” trade policies and “forever wars” associated with their party’s presidential and congressional leaders . , along with his ongoing efforts to undermine the wildly popular federal retirement programs. Trump reveled in all this alienation. But before his arrival…

Tthe European Broadcasting Union, which organizes Eurovision, is like the European Central Bank: whenever it is called upon to make an important decision, it can always be relied on to make the wrong one, and it depends entirely on a mixture of goodwill and inertia which leads the international community not to talk about it. His bet is a pervasive sense of “Oh well, he made the wrong call again. Never mind. Better luck next year/the next global financial crisis”, and it’s one that mostly pays off. This time tomorrow we’ll have forgotten that he wouldn’t allow Volodymyr Zelenskiy to…

POLITICAL GATHERING: Legislators address the OETA veto | news
Local lawmakers are reacting to Gov. Kevin Stitt’s veto of House Bill 2820, which unless overridden, would defund the Oklahoma Educational Television Authority (OETA) and force it to shut down operations. Rep. Sherrie Conley, R-Newcastle, voted for the bill because she believes the station is a valuable asset to the state. “I agree that OETA provides valuable educational content and emergency outreach services that are helpful to Oklahoma residents,” Conley said. “At the same time, I understand some of the governor’s concerns about spending taxpayer dollars on content that may not align with most Oklahoman values.” Stitt has said he…
