9 Mega Millions tickets were one Mega Ball short of winning it all

Some people came close to winning it all on Tuesday night Mega Millions drawing, but they were one ball short of winning the big jackpot. No one won the $830 million payout, and the estimated prize for Friday night’s drawing has grown to $1 billion.

According to Mega Millions, nine tickets match the first five numbers but do not match the Mega Ball. The game’s Megaplier feature was bought by one of those tickets, increasing its prize to $3 million, while the rest won $1 million.

Two of the $1 million tickets were bought in New Jersey, two were bought in New York and others were sold in California, Florida, Illinois and Ohio. The $3 million winner was also from Ohio.

Mega Millions says 156 tickets match four of the first five numbers and the Mega Ball. Three dozen entries had the Megaplier feature, increasing their prize to $30,000, while the rest won $10,000.

“Even a thousand dollars would help,” one woman told CBS Minnesota. “With gas pricesjust saying.”

With the one-time payment for the cash option now over half a million dollars, as opposed to an annual payment spread over 30 years, people still have a chance to win big.

“I don’t think anyone would know what to do with that, would they?” Omar Castillo told CBS News Radio while he was buying tickets in Los Angeles ahead of Tuesday night’s drawing. “I mean, it’s just a huge amount.”
