BREAKING: Dyer says all seven victims of Sunday’s shooting are stable. “Incidents like this cannot and should not happen in our city centre,” he said. “We want to have a safe downtown.” Dyer said the city has worked hard, but obviously needs to do more to make the area safe. The mayor said the city will expand the “controlled entry” program, which restricts entry to certain access points, which will be manned by gun-sniffing dogs. Those without a canceled carry permit will have their guns confiscated, he said. “There are people who come and just hang out, creating a festival atmosphere, who don’t even go into the bars,” he said. Dyer said he would prefer to make downtown a gun-free zone, but the state legislature has barred cities from making that call. He said people who are afraid to go to the center “break his heart.” Previous article below: Orlando police are searching for the person who shot into a crowd in downtown Orlando early Sunday morning. Seven people were injured but are expected to recover. It happened in the area of Wall Street Plaza and South Orange Avenue around 2 a.m. Police say a large fight broke out as the bars and restaurants were closing. They say that’s when someone pulled out a gun and opened fire, hitting seven people. “And seven people, especially in the crossfire is bad. It’s bad,” said Martin Carmona, a resident. “I think it’s crazy because this block is always closed. There’s always a lot of police and stuff, so just knowing that it happened here is crazy.” “The fact that this could even happen, it’s pretty unreal, but the way things are right now it’s not too surprising, I guess,” said Nico Zografakis, a resident. Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith says detectives are actively looking for the person who pulled the trigger and are checking surveillance cameras. “Please, we really need the community’s help in this, so please contact us if you have any information about this shooting,” Smith said. Detectives were gathering evidence after sunrise. “It’s very disturbing and definitely could have been avoided,” said William Solomon, a resident. Some frequent visitors to downtown Orlando are reconsidering going out when there are large crowds. “Which is why I left so early today. I’m like, let me go when I’m dead instead of when you feel like making a sardine. here because anything can happen,” Solomon said. “Things like this shouldn’t be happening right now. I think we should all try to pull together.” Police say six of those who were shot were sent to a nearby hospital. The other went to the hospital alone. Police are asking for the community’s help in finding the suspect.
