A 36-year-old Ocklawaha man was arrested after a victim accused him of breaking down the front door of his home and strangling him.
Sunday, a deputy with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office responded to a local residence in reference to a domestic disturbance. Upon arrival, the deputy made contact with the victim, who advised that Derek Shane Harris had grabbed his neck.

According to the victim, Harris had returned to the residence around 12:30 p.m. from work and took a nap until approximately 6 p.m. The victim stated that Harris woke up and took the dogs outside.
When Harris went outside, the victim stated that he had left the front door open. She advised to close the front door but leave it open.
The victim told the officer that Harris walked up to the unlocked door and broke it down to get back into the house. She said Harris walked up to her and grabbed her by the neck.
During the incident, he told the deputy that his airflow was restricted and he was having difficulty breathing. After the alleged incident, Harris left the residence.
The deputy noted in the MCSO report that the victim’s voice was hoarse during the interview.
Prior to the deputy’s arrival at the scene, another MCSO deputy located Harris traveling in a vehicle near the 800 block of S 314A Highway. The deputy conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle and Harris was taken into custody.
The MCSO report stated that after Harris was read his Miranda rights, he admitted to breaking down the front door, although he denied strangling the victim. He claimed he had no idea how the victim had sustained his injuries.
The deputy noted in the report that the victim’s injuries appeared to be consistent with her statements. Harris was arrested and transported to the Marion County Jail, where he is currently being held on $2,000 bond. He faces a felony count of domestic assault by strangulation.
A court date has been scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 6 at 9 a.m., according to jail records.
