An off-duty Monterey Park Police Department officer was shot and killed in a parking lot.

Downey, California – An off-duty officer with the Monterey Park Police Department was shot and killed in a parking lot on Monday, August 8, 2022.

The shooting happened around 3:25 pm PT in a parking lot in front of a gym at the shopping center located at 12070 Lakewood Boulevard.

The police officer found a man with gunshot wounds at the scene and it appeared the man may have been shot in or near a black Dodge Charger.

Paramedics responded and later pronounced him dead at the scene.

Investigators discovered the victim was an off-duty officer with the Monterey Park Police Department, but the police officer’s name has not yet been released.

A possible motive and circumstances surrounding the shooting are under investigation.

Moments ago tonight, a posse of police vehicles followed the body of the fallen police officer to the corner office near downtown Los Angeles, California; he passed under a large American flag that was draped from 2 Los Angeles City Fire Department ladder fire trucks as firefighters waved as the van passed the corners.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with additional information is encouraged to call Detective Ron Gee at (562) 904-2331 or Lt. Dwayne Cooper at (562) 904-2370.
