The Dallas Cowboys probably deserve credit for recognizing a problem and working quickly to fix it.
So… is it fixed?
The Cowboys are signing kicker Brett Maher after his practice Tuesday at the team’s training camp in Oxnard. And in an obviously related move, it’s Texas Tech rookie UDFA Jonathan Garibay who is being waived.
So after Tuesday’s four-man test, it is CFL standout Lirim Hajrullahu who is left standing, and he is training today as the club works to finalize a meeting with Maher. in the field now
Is the new kicker competition being created? Hajrullahu against Maher.
The Cowboys brought four kickers to practice Tuesday, according to head of personnel Will McClay. The names:
The well-known Brett Maher.
Cole Murphy.
Matt Amendola.
JJ Molson.
“We just want to take a look at the best kickers available right now,” McClay said, a gentlemanly way of saying the two guys who have spent the last few months in Dallas working out in uniforms and have spent the last two weeks scrimmaging a Training camp might not be “the best kickers available right now.”
Maher spent the 2018 and 2019 seasons in Dallas, making 80.6% and 66.7% of his field goals. He jumped to 88.9 percent last season (16-for-18) with the Saints

Ammendola played in six games last year with the New York Jets, making 13 of 19 field goals for them (68.4 percent).
Cole Murphy was with the USFL’s Michigan Panthers, where he made 11 of his 12 field goals.
JJ Molson has spent parts of the last two seasons on the Green Bay Packers practice squad.
Are these guys better than these?
How tough has it been for rookie Jonathan Garibay and CFL star Lirim Hajrullahu? So tough that it was just a few days ago when a team source told us Dallas’ plan was to get through this week, including Saturday’s preseason game at the Denver Broncos, before deciding this pairing wasn’t right for at work. .
But neither kicker currently on the roster has consistently impressed. (See a workbook here.) … and so the search is on.
Former CFL star Hajrullahu, arguably, has been less bad than Texas Tech rookie UDFA Garibay, but that’s about as complimentary as we’re going to get.
“These two are competing for a job,” McCarthy said. “At some point they had to start getting comfortable and kicking more consistently. That’s just stating the facts.”
“At the end of the day, the rope is here. Somebody has to pick it up.”
And now it’s Maher’s turn to take the plunge.
