The long lines we’ve all become accustomed to seeing at airports this year may suggest they’ve never been busier, but the truth is that air traffic is still lower than it was before the COVID-19 pandemic.
Sydney Airport today released its traffic performance report for June, which revealed it had 2,564,716 passengers this month, down 25% on June 2019.
Domestic traffic is approaching pre-pandemic levels, down 10.6% from 2019, but the number of international passengers is barely half of what it was before.
Chief executive Geoff Culbert said the airport was still working to improve its service to travellers.
“The growing demand for travel is encouraging, but it is clearly creating challenges for an industry that is still trying to rebuild itself operationally,” he said.
“With the June long weekend and peak school holidays behind us, we will continue to work on our operational recovery together with our airlines and each of the 800 organizations at the airport.”
