BEAVER TWP., Pa. (EYT) – State police at Clarion have filed aggravated assault and related charges against a Knox man for seriously injuring a man during a shooting incident that caused a stretch of state Route 338 to be closed Aug. 8.

Court documents state Clarion State Police filed criminal charges against a 28-year-old man Levi Michael Barrettof Knox on Tuesday, August 16, in the office of Magisterial District Judge Jarah Lee Heeter.

According to a criminal complaint, PSP Clarion received a report on Aug. 8 of a disturbance from two known whistleblowers.

Two unidentified men were reported outside a residence on Little Germany Road in Beaver Township, Clarion County. Callers reported hearing a knock on the front door as well as gunshots.

Upon arrival, the soldiers searched the area and discovered Levi Barrett near the intersection of Little Germany Road and State Route 338.

Barrett informed troopers that he was with the victim, whose location was unknown at the time. Police discovered a 9mm semi-automatic handgun and “signs of a physical altercation” at the intersection. Barrett related to troopers that “no one was hit” before being transported to Clarion Hospital for injuries, according to the complaint.

An extensive search of the area was conducted with the assistance of the PSP Aviation Unit, during which time the victim was discovered in a wooded area, southwest of Route 338 and Little Germany Road .

While questioning the victim, he explained that Barrett was “trying to kill him” and that he had shot him, the complaint states.

Police observed the victim with serious bodily injuries to his left ear, mouth and right thumb. He was then taken to Clarion Hospital, the complaint states.

Police then interviewed the complainants who reported hearing banging on the front door at approximately 11:55 pm on August 7th.

As the complainants approached the door, two males were observed walking away from their residence towards Little Germany Road. The complainants saw the men walking down the road towards Route 338 as they both heard what they believed to be gunshots coming from the direction of the individuals, according to the complaint.

Police then interviewed the victim while she was admitted to Clarion Hospital’s emergency room. The victim explained that he was at Barrett’s residence the night before and in the early morning hours. While there, an argument ensued between the two and Barrett attacked him, the complaint states.

During the altercation, the victim suffered serious bodily injuries to his left ear, mouth and right thumb.

The victim reported that after the altercation, Barrett retrieved a handgun from inside his residence and threatened to kill him before shooting at him, the complaint states.

The victim left Barrett’s residence on foot and traveled to a nearby residence for help. Barrett followed the victim down Little Germany Road with the gun and fired more shots at him, according to the complaint.

According to the complaint, the victim consented to the release of his medical history which indicated he suffered from large soft tissue lacerations on his forehead, tissue damage to his left ear, a missing tooth and a partial amputation of his right thumb.

The victim was taken to a Pittsburgh hospital for treatment.

Barrett was arraigned at 4pm on Tuesday 16 August before Judge Heeter on the following charges:

– Aggravated Assault: Attempts to cause an SBI or do injury with extreme indifference, felony 1
– Aggravated Assault: Attempts to provoke or provoke BI with a deadly weapon, felony 2
– Terrorist threats with intent to terrorize another, misdemeanor 1
– Possession of an instrument of crime with intent, misdemeanor 1
– Simple assault, misdemeanor 2 (three counts)
– Recklessly endangering another person, misdemeanor 2

It is currently awaiting a preliminary hearing.
