A Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation news release said two police officers were killed in an officer-involved shooting Saturday afternoon in the village of Cameron.

UPDATE: A news release from the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation said two police officers were killed in an officer-involved shooting Saturday afternoon in the village of Cameron.

The statement read “At approximately 3:38 p.m., an officer with the Chetek Police Department conducted a traffic stop. During the traffic stop, gunfire was exchanged. A Chetek Police Officer and a Chetek Police Officer Cameron were pronounced dead at the scene. The individual involved was taken to a hospital where they later died.”

The statement says there is no threat to the community.

The DCI said they are leading the investigation into the incident with assistance from the Barron County Sheriff’s Office, Rusk Co. Sheriff’s Office, Wisconsin DNR, Wisconsin State Patrol, Lab of Crime for the State of Wisconsin and a DCI Crime Response Specialist.

The statement said DCI would “review the evidence and determine the facts of this incident and provide investigative reports to the Barron County District Attorney upon conclusion of the investigation.”

UPDATE (WQOW) – There is a heavy police presence on County Road SS in Barron County Saturday afternoon after two officers were killed in the line of duty.

A News 18 reporter at the scene spoke with a Barron County Sheriff’s Department deputy who confirmed it was an officer-involved shooting.

The Marinette County Deputy Sheriff’s Association asked for prayers for the families of two officers lost in the line of duty at a Facebook post.

The Rice Lake Police Department, a Facebook post, said, “Our hearts go out to the Chetek Police Department and the family, friends and community of the Village of Cameron Police Department.” The Department updated its profile picture to an image of a police badge with black and blue lines around 6:30 p.m. This is usually done when an officer dies in the line of duty.

No further details have been released at this time.
